Reliant Stadium

Client:
Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX

Project:
Glenn Rehbein Companies was chosen to install a new turf system for the new Reliant Stadium, which opened in August 2002.

Challenge:
The stadium required a new turf system that was natural and portable. The turf needed to be both durable and easily repaired due to the excessive wear from sporting events and the damaging effects of extensive time without sunlight. Consideration also had to be given to the effect of the turf on the athletes, who required a forgiving (non-hard) surface.

RESI Solution:
RESI designed and implemented a system that used 8 foot by 8 foot portable turf modules that were 7 1/2 inches deep and included a metal drainage system. The modules incorporated a growing medium 41/2 inches deep, which was reinforced with reflex mesh elements. The portable system also included a unique enhanced rootzone profile.

Results:
The uniquely portable design of the modules allow for the removal and replacement of any single module without adverse effects on the surrounding modules. This easy exchange helps combat both the excessive wear and long periods of time in the shade to which the stadium turf is subject. The field is completely removed to an outside nursery once a year while the Stadium hosts the Livestock Show and Rodeo and other events. The reflex mesh elements (small pieces of poly-propylene mesh) increase field stability, aid in water and air management, and provide the forgiving surface required by the athletes.
